The Berliner Höhenweg is the ultimate classic multi-day hut-to-hut tour. You hike with your own luggage through the Zillertal Alps Nature Park. Along the way you will pass crystal clear lakes, imposing mountain peaks, green valleys, amazing nature and you will be rewarded with breathtaking views. Early in the hiking season, you may encounter snowfields.

During the tour you will mostly walk at altitudes varying between 1,800 and 3,100 meters. At the end of the day, you will feel proud and fulfilled when you are in the refuge. On the terrace, you can share your experience of the day with other guests. Together you will enjoy a hearty meal and you will have a cool drink at sunset.

At a few pass crossings you will come across steel cables, these will help you get up and down the slope well. Of course we are there to guide you (possibly with material) in a safe way.

The hike is suitable for experienced mountain hikers from the age of 18 with a good level of fitness. It's also nice if you don't suffer from vertigo... :-)

Hut life is an experience in itself!!

Many different mountaineers come together in the huts after a long day of exercise. It is a pleasant get-together, exchanging experiences and above all recovering from the day. Games are played and people enjoy a nutritious meal together. Eating often takes place between 19:00 and 20:00.

In the mountain huts there are a number of rules and customs, in order to structure the 'coexistence' with the other attendees. The caretaker of the hut will assign you a place to sleep. We often sleep in 'a Lager', a dormitory with a row of narrow mattresses or bunk beds next to each other. The limited spaces are designed to accommodate as many people as possible. Blankets and pillows are always provided. To keep the sleeping quarters neat and livable, everyone folds their own blankets neatly in the morning. Because the blankets are not washed after every user, a sleeping bag is often mandatory.

Most cabins are equipped with solar panels or a generator for electricity. People are economical with energy, which is why the lights are turned on late and out again at 22:00 at the latest. From that moment on, it's 'Hüttenruhe'. There is no light at night, so it is useful if you have a headlight or flashlight at hand. The cabins are simple, as are the sanitary facilities. Nowadays it is possible to shower in more and more cabins, for which you can buy a shower token on site.

Day 1

Start: Mayrhofen Bus Station
Final destination: Gamshütte 1,921 m
Walking time: 5 hours

We depart from Mayrhofen Bus Station and first walk to Finkenberg. We leave the hustle and bustle of Mayrhofen behind us, to instead enjoy peace, space and beautiful nature in the Zillertal Alps. From Finkenberg we walk in about 3 hours on forest paths to the Gamshütte. From the Gamshütte you have a great view of Mayrhofen (on a clear day).

Day 2

Start: Gamshütte 1,921 m
Final destination: Friesenberghaus 2.498 m
Walking time: 9 hours

The day starts early! Today we hike one of the longest stretches of the Berliner Höhenweg in one day. We walk to Friesenberghaus in about 9 hours. Forest paths are replaced by narrower paths with stone and gravel over steep mountain flanks.

Day 3

Start: Friesenberghaus 2.498 m
Final destination: Olperer Hütte 2,389 m
Walking time: 5 hours

To compensate for yesterday's tough and long day, a shorter and lighter hike is on the program today. Be surprised during the tour; The guide has planned an impressive surprise on today's route!

Day 4

Start: Olperer Hütte 2.389 m
Final destination: Furtschaglhaus 2,295 m
Walking time: 6 hours

Start the day with a hearty breakfast, because today we make a lot of altimeters! We hike to the Furtschaglhaus. From the Olperer Hütte we descend over a short stretch of alpine pasture, which then turns into a serpentine path with stones. We arrive at the parking lot of the Schlegeis reservoir, where we let our legs rest for a while.

A long and flat path along the reservoir takes you to the next climb. This climb is tough, but as soon as we arrive at the hut you have forgotten this: enjoy a beautiful view here!

Day 5

Start: Furtschaglhaus 2,295 m
Final destination: Berliner Hütte 2,042 m
Walking time: 7 hours

A day full of highlights! First of all, we hike to the highest mountain peak of this trek; Schönbichler Horn at an altitude of 3,134 meters. In addition, we will spend the night in the oldest hut; the Berliner Hütte (since 1879!).

The route is tough because of the large differences in altitude. We hike on paths with stone, gravel and boulders to the Berliner Hütte. Along the way we climb about 900 altimeters and descend 1,160 hm. At the top of Schönbichler Horn we have, on a clear day, a breathtaking view!

Day 6

Start: Berliner Hütte 2.042 m
Final destination: Greizer Hütte 2,227 m
Walking time: 7 hours

Due to large differences in altitude, the area we cross today has a very varied character. We first walk along a mountain lake; the Schwarzsee. When conditions are favourable, the surroundings are reflected on the mountain lake, resulting in beautiful pictures. We take a moment of rest here, so that pictures can be taken. After this moment of rest, we hike and climb to the Mörchenscharte. This is a tough climb, but once we reach the transition, you will be treated to a great view!

Before we continue the tour, you put on your via ferrata set, to descend secured on a steel cable to about 1,800 meters. The last climb of the day goes along the mountainsides of the Floitental, to the Greizer Hütte: our final destination for the day.

Day 7

Start: Greizer Hütte 2,227 m
Final destination: Kasseler Hütte 2,178 m
Walking time: 6 hours

Today's hike is comparatively a bit easier and lighter. We pass the Lapenscharte and then a steep descent to the Eisklamm. The path through the Eisklamm is at an average altitude of 2,200 metres. We walk through a bowl, where you use your via ferrata set for extra safety on some parts.

Day 8

Start: Kasseler Hütte 2,178 m
Final destination: Karl von Edel Hütte 2,238 m
Walking time: 9 hours

The day starts early today! We have a long and intensive journey ahead of us. We walk to the Karl von Edel Hütte in about 9 hours. During the route we hike over 7 ridges. Once we arrive at the Karl von Edel Hütte, we rest at the foot of the Ahorn Spitze. Here we have a nice view over Mayrhofen.

Please note that for this stage it is advised to do it only when the weather conditions are good enough.

Day 9

Start: Karl von Edel Hütte 2.238 m
Destination: Mayrhofen bus station

Basically, we hike from the Karl von Edel Hütte directly back to our starting point, Mayrhofen bus station. If you still have enough energy left, you can decide to climb the Ahorn Spitze before descending to Mayrhofen. From the Ahorn Spitze you have a great view over the Zillertal!
